Every year, above 4 million people in more than 20 countries raise much-needed funds to generate awareness and save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement. During this event, participants and cancer survivors come together to celebrate what they’ve overcome, remember people who’ve fought cancer, and take action against the disease, which has taken so much from all of us.
On September 14, American Cancer Society Relay For Life is coming to Atwater. The event has emerged as a life-changing event that lasts for 24 hours owing to the fact that cancer never sleeps. At the Relay event, group of people go camping and take turns walking or running around a track. The event is also marked with food, games, and activities that build camaraderie and family-friendly environment for the entire community.
There are many moments that create a unique Relay experience. Though event details may vary by location, but all events have certain main moments in common, which include: opening ceremony at 9AM, followed by Survivors Lap ceremony, when all the cancer survivors take the first lap around the track cheered on by other participants to celebrate their victory over the deadly disease.
Another highlight of the event is Luminaria ceremony that takes place at around 730 PM to honor people, we have lost to cancer, which is followed by the fightback ceremony that signifies the emotional commitment we have to continue our fight against cancer. The closing ceremony takes place at around 9AM next day morning and it’s time to remember lives of those, we have lost and to celebrate the commitment shown by each of the participant.
