Artist Statement:
I started out as a photorealist, and drifted through trompe l'oeil still life painting and appropriation art prior to moving to the Rio Grande Valley. When I moved to Brownsville I was looking to create a new style based on the binational fronterizo culture. I first worked in a manner that was a combination of tattoo flash and Tejano prison art, using strong outline and gradations of brilliant color. Eventually I discovered a way to use a style based on indigenous Mexica or Aztec, and Mixteca codices and the straight from the tube hues of the Washington Color School of abstract color field painting. The local preference for Spanish art and the adoration of Picasso Miro and Dali over indigenous Mexican art made this seem like swimming against the prevailing current.
