SUMMARY:WHAT THE DICKENS! A THEATRICAL TOUR OF TANNERS\, SHREWSBURY
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 11th March 2020 7.30-9.30pm\nShrewsbury Branch\n\n‘Please Sir\, I want some more’ …. More! These immortal words have determinedly moved their way through not only literary history but of course stage and film. Their creator Charles Dickens is without question one of the most famous writers ever to have drawn breath\, and 2020 sees the 150th anniversary of his death. We are aware that almost every county in this fair isle has a claim to Dickens links (no matter how tenuous) but we Shropshire folk are proud that our county provided Dickens with his inspiration for Miss Havisham\; one of the first public readings of A Christmas Carol was read aloud by Dickens in our county town\, Shrewsbury\; and he stayed at the Lion Hotel - a stone’s throw from Tanners. And of course\, in 1984 the much-celebrated film version of this great festive novella was filmed in Shrewsbury\, with Tanners 26 Wyle Cop being used as host and venue for the Fezziwig Christmas party.\n\nThus\, we have decided to offer a tour\, a Dickensian tour of Tanners. Let us guide you through the many rooms\, alcoves and cellars of this ancient building. With its beams\, dormer windows and creaking floors it readily resembles something straight from the pages of The Old Curiosity Shop. Guests will arrive at the Cellars Shop to receive a glass of fizz\, commencing a tour with Fagin (Alix Chidley-Uttley) and The Dodger (Luke Dowdy) who will\, in costume\, guide guests from room to room to be greeted with the familiar faces and scenes of Dickens’ stories and characters.\n\nThe perfect opportunity to glimpse into the history of this old family wine merchants\, and to celebrate that much-loved Victorian wordsmith\, Charles Dickens. We have great expectations that a fabulous night awaits. Consider yourself most welcome!\n\nPlease note\, customers are welcome to wear fancy dress (entirely optional) and there is a bottle of fizz for the best costume!\n\nNota Bene\; this is a very old building with uneven flooring and numerous staircases so sensible footwear is encouraged. We will also be taking photographs on the evening\, should you wish to be exempt from this just notify us on the night.\n\nTo purchase your ticket: https://www.tanners-wines.co.uk/what-the-dickens-a-theatrical-tour-of-tanners
