Description | The Museum of South Texas History (“MOSTHistoryâ€), a museum chronicling the heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico, is proud to present Vanguard Academy Art Exhibit, a short-term exhibiton that will be available for viewing until Sunday, May 1 in the Classroom meeting room. The Vanguard Academy Art Exhibit is a collaboration between MOSTHistory and Vanguard Academy, a charter school located in Pharr. MOSTHistory reached out to art teacher Travis Trapp and his colleagues, Traci Lowe and Becky Regalado, and discussed a fun, educational way for students to learn history by using art. More than 60 elementary, middle and high school students at Vanguard Academy were given an assignment to copy or interpret six photographs from MOSTHistory’s Margaret McAllen Memorial Archives by using watercolors, graphite or crayons. Now available for viewing are artistic copies or interpretive work of the following photographs: Echo Hotel in Edinburg circa 1959, Teatro Reforma in northeastern Mexico circa 1950s, portraits of John Closner and Mara Mildred Wadsworth, and two different angles of the Hidalgo County Courthouse circa 1910 and 1920s. “This was really a great project for our students,†said Trapp, a Brownsville native. “Not only did the students interpret and practice their observation skills, they also learned about local history which is one of the important subjects in the TEKS curriculum. This was a crossover curriculum.†The community is invited to enjoy this special exhibit until May 1 in the Classroom meeting room. The Vanguard Academy Art Exhibit is included in the regular museum admission fee. For more information about exhibit times, please contact the museum at (956) 383-6911. |
