Description | Open houses in April will offer information about noncredit allied health training programs offered by Walters State Community College. Information sessions are planned on all four of the college’s campuses: •Sevier County Campus – April 21, 6-8 p.m. •Morristown Campus – April 23, 6-8 p.m. •Greeneville/Greene County Campus – April 28, 6-8 p.m. •Claiborne County Campus – April 30, 6-8 p.m. “Many of our programs can train someone for a new career in a matter of weeks or months,†said Dr. Linda Nelms, coordinator for healthcare programs in the college’s Division of Workforce Training. “Our students often enroll after losing a job or returning to the workforce after an absence. Others want to change careers. These courses lead to rewarding jobs in a short amount of time. We also have no waiting lists and ACT scores are not required,†Nelms said. Classes are offered at all four campuses throughout the year. Programs that are now enrolling include certified nursing assistant, registered dental assistant, phlebotomy technician, EKG/ECOG technician and clinical medical assistant. Classes that will start this fall include registered dietary aide expanded functions, patient care technician, and Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Where appropriate, courses prepare students to take state or national exams for certifications. Students are responsible for the registration and cost of these exams. “Employers want to know that potential employees are highly trained and qualified. Acquiring a professional certification lets employers know that an individual is prepared to meet the challenge of an ever-changing workforce,†Nelms said. Nelms will be available at each session to answer questions and discuss course requirements and job responsibilities and expectations. Over 5,000 individuals have completed at least one course offered through Walters State’s Division of Workforce Training during this fiscal year.
